Why does liquid waste need different handling than solid waste?

Liquid waste can move, leak, spread, or react differently than solid material, which is one reason it often needs more careful storage, transportation, and disposal. In some cases, the way it is handled also depends on what the liquid contains.

Can liquid waste be recycled or treated instead of disposed of?

In some cases, yes. Certain liquid wastes may be treated, processed, or managed through a recovery option instead of being sent straight for disposal, depending on the type of material and the services available.
