Overview

Covanta Springfield, LLC, also known as the Pioneer Valley Resource Recovery Facility, is compactly located on 5.3 acres in Agawam, MA. It commenced commercial operations in 1988. This facility combusts 408 tons per day of solid waste generated from its operations throughout Western Massachusetts, and serves the needs of 16 long-term contract communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut. In addition to the three units, the facility has an attached 500 tons per day transfer station. During its operating history, the facility has offset the use of 27,000 gallons of oil per day, thereby reducing the need for additional oil or coal-fired utilities in the sensitive Pioneer Valley region. This EfW facility was one of the first in the United States to successfully co-combust wastewater treatment plant sludge and fats, oil, and grease.

Accepted materials may include municipal solid waste.
