Covanta operates the Durham York Energy Centre, a municipally owned Energy-from-Waste facility in Clarington Business Park, located in Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. The facility processes a maximum of 140,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per year from the Regions of Durham and York, and generates 17.5 megawatts of renewable energy – enough to power over 10,000 homes. All process water is reused within the facility, with zero wastewater discharge to the municipal sanitary sewer system. This facility also recovers ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling.
